Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year for any reason—excused, unexcused, or due to suspension. This is a critical issue that affects student success from pre-K through high school. It's a key indicator of students at risk of falling behind academically and socially. Unlike truancy, which focuses on unexcused absences, chronic absenteeism captures all types of missed school time, providing a more accurate picture of a student's engagement.
Why it Matters
Research consistently shows that chronic absenteeism is a powerful predictor of academic failure and dropping out. A student who is chronically absent in kindergarten is far less likely to be reading proficiently by third grade. By middle school, it's a strong signal that a student may fail courses. In high school, it's a leading indicator of whether a student will graduate. This isn't just a matter of lost instructional time; it's about a student's connection to the school community and their belief in their ability to succeed.
Addressing chronic absenteeism requires a comprehensive, school-wide approach. We can't solve it with a single intervention. Instead, we use a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS).
Tier 1: Universal Prevention * This includes school-wide initiatives to promote a positive school culture where students feel a sense of belonging. We'll focus on building strong relationships and ensuring clear, consistent communication with families about the importance of attendance.
Tier 2: Early Intervention * For students who are starting to show a pattern of absences, we'll implement early interventions. This might involve check-ins with a mentor or counselor, personalized attendance plans, and connecting families with school resources.
Tier 3: Intensive Support * For students with severe and persistent absenteeism, we'll create a dedicated team to conduct a deeper investigation into the root causes. This may involve home visits, connecting families with community services (e.g., healthcare, housing, transportation), or a referral to a student attendance review board.
By taking a proactive and preventative approach, we can identify students in need of support early on and work collaboratively with families to get them back on track. This training will provide you with the tools and strategies to be an effective part of this solution.

A healthy school culture is crucial for academic success, staff morale, and student well-being. A positive culture fosters a sense of belonging, encourages collaboration, and supports a growth mindset. Conversely, a negative culture can lead to high turnover rates, student disengagement, and conflict. The audit provides an objective look at these dynamics, offering actionable insights rather than just anecdotal observations.
The audit typically examines several key dimensions of school life, including:
Communication: How effectively information flows among students, staff, and parents.
Equity: How fair and inclusive the school environment is for all members.
Leadership: The effectiveness and influence of school administrators and teacher leaders.
Professional Development: The relevance and impact of learning opportunities for staff.
Student Voice: The extent to which students feel heard and are involved in decision-making.

Today’s classrooms are filled with challenges—and opportunities. Research consistently shows that student engagement is the most powerful predictor of academic success, yet educators are often left asking: How do we actually achieve it?
In my keynotes, I share evidence-based insights, practical strategies, and inspiring stories that bridge the gap between theory and practice. Attendees will leave with actionable tools to build classrooms where students are motivated, focused, and eager to learn.
why engagement matters
Prioritizing engagement means creating environments that value student voice, spark curiosity, and connect lessons to real-world experiences. It also means recognizing that engagement looks different for every learner, requiring a mix of strategies: from interactive discussions and project-based learning to technology integration and culturally responsive practices.
Student engagement is not just a teaching strategy — it is a commitment to ensuring that every student sees themselves as capable, valued, and essential in the learning community. When engagement is at the center, schools become places where students don’t just attend, but truly thrive.
A strong school culture inspires belonging, drives engagement, and creates the conditions for success.
Culture focus: engagement
Neuroscience shows that engagement activates the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine, which enhances motivation, focus, and memory retention. This means that when students are curious, challenged, and emotionally invested, their brains are literally wired to learn more effectively. In short, when students are engaged, they don’t just absorb facts—they build neurological pathways that support lifelong learning, stronger relationships, and higher achievement. Schools are facing challenges like chronic absenteeism, disengagement, and learning gaps that cannot be solved without addressing the core issue: how to make learning meaningful and relevant.
Culture focus: attendance
Reducing chronic absenteeism starts with awareness, connection, and action. Our professional development for educators and workshops for families equips schools with practical strategies to identify root causes, build strong home-school partnerships, and create supportive environments that encourage daily attendance. Together, we help students show up, stay engaged, and succeed.
Many principals recognize that chronic absenteeism is one of the biggest barriers to student success. You want to address it—because you see the direct connection between consistent attendance, achievement, and school culture. However, the reality of a principal’s day-to-day role often gets in the way. You’re pulled in multiple directions managing instruction, supporting teachers, handling discipline, meeting with families, responding to crises, and completing district and state compliance tasks. With so many urgent demands, there’s little time left to create and sustain proactive attendance initiatives. The result is that absenteeism remains a priority in theory, but principals often lack the dedicated time and capacity to give it the focused, consistent attention it needs.
Culture focus: coaching
At Faye Lewis Consulting, we know that reducing chronic absenteeism takes more than policies or awareness campaigns—it requires transforming the daily learning experience for students. That’s why we pair professional development on chronic absenteeism with instructional coaching focused on engagement strategies. Our approach ensures that leaders and teachers not only understand the root causes of absenteeism but also have the practical tools to address them where it matters most: in the classroom. Through ongoing coaching, educators learn to implement engaging, student-centered practices that foster connection, motivation, and belonging—making students more likely to show up, stay engaged, and succeed. This integrated model moves schools from simply tracking attendance data to creating sustainable solutions that drive both presence and performance.
Culture focus: Leadership
Our leadership training equips current and aspiring leaders with the skills, strategies, and mindsets needed to navigate the complex demands of leading schools and organizations, while focusing on culture. Our training includes developing self-awareness and emotional intelligence, strengthening communication and conflict resolution skills and building and motivating high-performing teams.
