My career began as a TFA corps member teaching 5th grade in the 7th ward in New Orleans, LA (I LOVE that city!), and after a fulfilling teaching career, I transitioned into administration, leading schools in NJ for 20 years. Over the years, I’ve worked with some of the most talented educators in the country.

However, the principalship was not easy. You’re dedicated to your job, but you also have to navigate life. Juggling life’s issues, and a demanding job, can be overwhelming. It’s why many don’t make it. Coaching for leaders wasn’t then, and still is not the norm. I didn’t have a coach, so I had to figure it all out, because there were no other options. Many of you are leading your organizations, sans a coach, while carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Strength without support is survival, not leadership, but asking for assistance was taboo.

I was the leader who everybody counted on to show up and have it all figured out, even when my personal life was in pieces. I led through dysfunction, toxic supervisors and team members, anxiety, sleepless nights, mental exhaustion, and through the throes of divorce, all while keeping up the image of “having it all together”. It almost broke me.

The lack of support that I experienced, when I was trying to do it all, is why I support school leaders today. Leadership should not be dark, and holding in what’s happening in your real life shouldn’t be the price of leading with impact.
